Our Hiring Process
- Stage 1
Applied
You've read all about the role and the great things that we do at UK Biobank and you've decided to submit an application. At this point your application will be awaiting review by the Talent Acquisition team.
- Stage 2
Review
We always aim to review applications as soon as possible and feed back to applicants without delay. At this stage of the process we will review your application against the essential and desirable criteria specified for the role. Your application is scored against the criteria and the applications that match most closely will be shortlisted to move onto the next stage in the process.
- Stage 3
Pre-screen
This stage is likely to be the first time you will have spoken to anyone at UK Biobank. We will discuss; what it is about UK Biobank and this opportunity that is of interest to you, some of the career moves you have made to date, logistics, e.g. salary and location and your expectations and motivations for the role. The applications that match most closely will be shortlisted for Line Manager review.
- Stage 4
1st Interview
We have assessed your application and confirmed that your skills and experience are a close match for the role, so we'd love to meet you. You'll be invited to an interview which will consist of a number of competency-based interview questions, specially written for the role that you have applied for. It will give you the opportunity to demonstrate how closely you match the skills and experience for the role, but also see if the role is right for you. We recommend that you adopt the STAR method when answering your interview questions. The STAR method is:
Situation: Introduce the situation to set the scene and provide context
Task: Describe the task - what needed to be done and why
Action: Explain what you did. Keep the focus on you and what you contributed specifically
Result: Describe the end result, focus on your accomplishments, insights and learning

- Stage 5
2nd Interview
Great news, you will have made the shortlist for 2nd round! Following the success of your previous interviews you will be invited to another meeting to meet some additional stakeholders for you to find out more about the people and culture at UK Biobank and to enable us to further assess your skills for the role. Whilst we continue to recommend that you adopt the STAR method when answering any competency questions.
- Stage 6
Offer
You will have been through the recruitment process and have been offered the position - Congratulations! The HR team will be in touch to provide you with documentation confirming the details of your offer and request some additional information from you to conduct the relevant background checks. The checks that we will need to complete will depend on the role, but as a minimum we will need to check your eligibility to work in the UK and your references.
- Stage 7
Hired
You will have been through the recruitment process and have been offered the position - Congratulations! The HR team will be in touch to provide you with documentation confirming the details of your offer and request some additional information from you to conduct the relevant background checks. The checks that we will need to complete will depend on the role, but as a minimum we will need to check your eligibility to work in the UK and your references.
